Citalapram

Updated

Was prescribed 20mg citalapram for my severe anxiety, I've been taking it for just 2 days, don't want to take anymore as the side effects are unbearable, I feel so sick all of the time, hearts racing, keep having hot flushes, trembling, generally feel ill. I'm so fed up of feeling sick. So my question is, will it be ok for me to just stop taking them as I've only taken 2? Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Hi Belle,

In my opinion since you've only taken 2 of these pills it would be safe to assume that you wouldn't experience any weird withdrawal effects, as this drug has not had time to build up in your system over a period of time. I am not an MD, but this is just an educated guess. I know if it was me personally, I would stop taking it after experiencing these undesirable side effects and look towards natural remedies that can handle the situation. I don't know if you're open to natural remedies, but it may be worth looking into if you don't want to deal with the harsh side effects of prescription medication. Natural remedies typically aren't quite as powerful for certain indications, but alternatively offer little, if any side effects at all.

Thank you for you're advise david, much appreciated! Have been off them now since tuesday, the anxiety I have now is much worse than before I took citalapram. Will look into natural remedies. Think would benefit from seeing a psychologist but don't know how to go about it or how much it would cost!

Hey Belle,

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner. I have close friends with relatively high anxiety and to my knowledge they have benefited from taking St John's Wort in combination with 5 HTP. This a great holistic alternative to anti anxiety prescription meds. Most people say that they feel comfortable with taking 900mg of St. John's Wort (daily) + 150mg of 5 HTP (daily); however If you choose this route I would recommend researching it first and starting off with a little less than that mentioned above and then increase to that amount over a few days time or whatever your doctor suggests if you consult him about it. Also try looking into Essential Oils. There are many of them that can help with stress, anxiety, and many other related and non-related conditions. :)

As far as a psychologist goes, I think it would be wise to first look up reviews for a specific one in your area to see if he or she has a good track record with successfully helping other patients. Then depending on your area, you can pretty much google their contact info to call or email them for pricing; then setup an appointment if you like what you hear. Hope that helps!

@ Belle. I was prescribed 10 mg of Lexapro. It is the sister drug to what you have. It goes by a different name than yours because it has no inactive ingrediants, but the active ingrediant is the same. Anyhow, it took about 7 days for the sick stomach and flu like symptoms to settle down. But the hot flushes and worse, the NON STOP SWEATING was more than could take. I quit taking it after my 10th pill. So my doctor prescribed what you have, same dose. She said while it is the same drug, it isn't quite as strong and has less side effects. I haven't had the courage to try it yet. Plus up until a few days ago, our weather has been in the 100's. I don't need any help sweating. Also, I had shoulder surgery last month and my arm is in a black heavy weight thick sling. The meds are gonna have to wait. My friend takes the same medicine we both have, but she has NO trouble with it.
I am not sure what the answer is. I am also thinking about a therapist. I have insurance, so we will see.
