Changes To Inactive Ingredients

Updated

Is there any company anywhere still manufacturing the old YELLOW Norco? (10/325 Hydrocodone Acetaminophen - formerly available by prescription from Activis/Watson.)

It was suggested that a Canadian Pharmacy might still have this medicine available. It will be a year in August. When the color changed, so did my life. The side effects are horrific. Chronic pain sufferers have been lumped together with abusers. When I asked what, if any of the inactive ingredients had been changed, I was told "that's proprietary" Considering that every seed in a loaf of bread must be identified and labeled??

So, my second question- Is there any way to force the release of this information? I am not interested in litigation - takes forever. Just want to know what has changed!

Hello, Ann! How are you?

No, the yellow is not available, anymore. I'm sorry and no, they don't have to specifically lay out what they may have changed in the inactive ingredients. They only need to make sure to use those from the list that the FDA considered safe and non-therapeutic.

Have you discussed the problem with your prescriber? They may be able to switch you to an alternative medication.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

Try Qualitest. It should be available at most pharmacies but they have to special order it. You can order Norco Brand and have your doctor write Dispense as Written or DAS or No Subsitution. You can also have your doctor do an appeal and Prior Auth for the Norco brand, which they may cover, but is least likely. Getting the pharmacist to order a different generic brand for you is an option. Qualitest and Mallinckrodt are very comparable and I personally have had a problem only with Amneal.

In the meantime, if you are able, there is a newer drug that is Serotogenic in nature called Nucynta. You cant use it if you are on antidepressants but if you aren't, it may be an alternative which is therapeutically equivalent. In other words, they will probably cover it, but it will be a higher end copay. To top that off, you can get a copay card for it which lowers the price down to $25 per script or so
