THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS:

Cephalexin is a first generation cephalosporin, semisynthetic origin. Only available for oral administration.

Cephalexin is not a drug of first choice for susceptible infections, because there are more effective drugs against these infections, however, is useful when presented with these drugs resistance of microorganisms.

Cephalexin is indicated as second-line treatment in patients allergic to penicillin, infections caused by susceptible organisms and diseases that have failed other treatments such as: infections in cystic fibrosis patients, prophylaxis for dental procedures, osteomyelitis due to Staphylococcus aureus resistant to penicillin , or Proteus mirabilis; otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae or other sensitive Streptococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus sp and Neisseria catarrhalis, peritonitis, pharyngitis streptococcal infection and prophylaxis in prostatectomy prostate, lower respiratory infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae and pyogenes, sinusitis, infections skin and soft tissue, urinary tract infections caused by E. coli, Proteus and Klebsiella.

Antibacterial spectrum: Cephalexin is an antibiotic belonging to the group of first-generation cephalosporins, so that its spectrum is rather small. Includes most gram-positive bacteria, including streptococci and penicillinase-producing staphylococci. Its activity against gram-negative bacteria is virtually restricted to E. coli, Klebsiella and Proteus mirabilis. The agencies listed below are hardy organisms and therefore should not be used Cephalexin: Enterococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus, Citrobacter, Enterobacter, Listeria monocytogenes, Proteus mirabilis different, Providencia, Serratia, Bacteroides fragilis and Pseudomonas, H. influenzae.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

Cephalexin is absolutely contraindicated in patients with a history or history of allergic reactions to cephalexin and other cephalosporins.

There may be cross-allergic reaction cephalexin and penicillin, so caution should be exercised in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin.

CAUTIONS:

It is important to monitor the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract and proper functioning of the renal system.

RESTRICTIONS OF USE DURING PREGNANCY AND LACTATION:

Risk Category B: In several studies indicate that Cephalexin appears to produce birth defects or fetal damage, even when administered after the second month of pregnancy.

ADVERSE REACTIONS:

Hematologic: In some patients receiving Cephalexin been reported neutropenia, eosinophilia and immune hemolytic anemia.

Central nervous system: Rarely neurotoxicity was observed. It is characterized by diplopia, headache and unsteady gait.

With high doses of cephalexin have been reported seizures and psychotic disorders.

Gastrointestinal: In this system presents the most common side effects of cephalexin. Treatment with this antibiotic can cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Sometimes it has been reported anal and genital itching.

Cephalexin may be induced by superinfection pseudomembranous colitis due to Clostridium difficile.

Discontinuation of treatment, more appropriate measures of support, reverse this effect.

Cephalexin may increase the numbers of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase.

Kidney and genitourinary system: Cephalexin has been associated with symptoms of vaginitis, genital and anal itching, vaginal and vulvovaginal moniliasis. While rare, cephalexin can induce nephrotoxicity, particularly in older patients with therapies to 1.5 weeks.

Skin rash has been observed, especially in patients with acute infectious mononucleosis assets, urticaria and dermatitis to the use of cephalexin. In some cases tables have triggered pemphigus vulgaris.

Other side effects observed with cephalexin include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, drug fever, tinnitus and serum sickness, but are rare.

DRUG INTERACTIONS AND OTHER GENDER:

The association of cephalexin with cephalosporins in general and aminoglycosides may result in severe nephrotoxicity.

The association with cholestyramine may decrease absorption of cephalexin.

Food also decrease the absorption of this antibiotic.

PRECAUTIONS IN RELATION TO EFFECTS OF CARCINOGENESIS, MUTAGENESIS, teratogenicity and fertility:

There are no reported effects of this kind with the use of cephalexin.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION:

Adults: The recommended dosage of cephalexin depends on the type of infection and susceptibility of the organism.

The recommended daily dose is 1 to 4 grams, divided into 4 doses.

250 mg every 6 hours, are suitable for infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

More severe infections may require higher doses.
