Can't Afford Xarelto At All At $445 To $465 A Month - Approx

Updated

Doctor put me on Xarelto for afib. They are giving me samples - but I looked up xarelto on Internet and it is $445 to 465 a month, approximately. Looked over the internet for help, got an Rx Savings Card from the doctor's office, which took off $18.03, and my insurance with Part D takes of 20%. If you get a manufacturer's coupon, it is for only one month. If you get some kind of low-cost help, it is for only one month, So I just cannot afford xarelto, and need to go to warfarin - I have to have something for Tier 1 or Tier 2 that I can afford. I had a hard time getting plavix because of the expense until they came out with a generic, BUT xarelto is more than twice as expensive at plavix was, AND I am almost 75 years old and on Social Security with a couple of small pensions. Food and shelter and my other meds have to come first. I cannot be out in the street and taking xarelto. I would die sooner that way than not taking xarelto!

I have been on xarelto for 11 days now, 20 mg, and I saw on the internet that you should start the first 20 days on 15 mg to get you used to xarelto. Also, I started taking xarelto in the morning, and found out on the internet that I should be taking xarelto in the evening with the evening meal--the doctor just slipped the prescription to me right before he left the examination room, without telling me anything of what to do, etc. Gave me a second prescription for amiodarone, and I asked lady in the office what that was for and she said it was to help with xarelto (she did not know or care). I looked this up on the internet, and it says a lot of people refuse to take this, as it ruins your thyroid, etc. But, I have had my thyroid killed twice with radioisotope because I had a thyroid that was almost twice as high as high (doctor waited until I was at a standstill before he sent me to an internist, then went to specialists). I went to hell and back until after a few years they got me to be able to stand to live--AND I CANNOT TAKE ANYTHING TO MESS UP MY THYROID--calling doctor's office today to get off xarelto, which I CANNOT AFFORD, and asking to be put on warfarin, which I can afford!!! Going Thursday for a stress test--if it is too much money, I will not take!!!

Have you tried Canada Drugs ? My husband and I get our meds from there. Usually it is less than Medicare co pay. It is perfectly safe. Don't let Big Pharma scare you.

I JUST saw a tv commercial that says there is a legal suit going on with that stuff. You should check that out. Ask your doctor for something else. They put me on Lyrica and it destroyed my life. I had been taking Gabapentin for 10 years and it was working just fine. I have NO CLUE why they switched my med UNLESS they were getting kick backs. I only take old school meds, tried and true and stood the test of time. Look up meds that aid with your condition and have been out there for a long time.

Good luck and God bless,

Jennifer

I used Warfaren for many years with no problems or side effects. Monitoring was no problem, and was very inexpensive. Try to learn all there is about side effects of Xarelta, and it's cost, you will opt for Warfarin.

It is worth checking Canada Drugs. Usually they are much lower in price.
Despite Big Pharma scare tactics, they are safe.

When I got low income help for RX's, they gave me 6 month's worth with a renewal for another 6 months. Every drug company has their own guidelines. Talk to the social worker at your local hospital. They will probably know who can help you if they can't. My doctor, when he needed to go on a blood thinner, went on warfarin--if he choose warfarin when he could take anything, that was good enough for me. I'm on warfarin for life (I've been on it for the past 15 years and I'm in my late 50's). The most important thing is getting a good clinic to monitor you. Most doctor's and clinics do evaluations too often and change dosages to soon. There is a lag-time before the effects of a dosage change are apparent (it could be a week--more or less depending on each person). I can eat anything I want and they adjust the warfarin for me--but I need to keep my diet steady. So if I want a big salad everyday, that's fine. if I decided to be a vegetarian, I might have to have my dosage adjusted. It took me a while to find a warfarin clinic that knew what they were doing. My clinic is run by pharmacists and it's all they do. Having them monitor made it easy to be on warfarin. If I need to have emergency surgery, they can reverse the anti-coagulation by Vit. K. It may be harder to reverse the anti-coagulation effect on some of the newer drugs--ask your pharmacist (if you have ANY questions about any drug, ask your pharmacist-- a lot of doctors don't know very much about the drugs they prescribe--they get most of the info from the drug rep.)
