Celexa contains the active ingredient Citalopram, which is an SSRI antidepressant and no, it hasn't been known to cause false positives for anything on standard drug tests.

I know this is an old post, but I just came home from an interview, and I took a mouth swab, and it came back positive for Cocaine, I havent done drugs in 10 years. The only thing in my system was Celexa, so yes, it can give a false positive, or, for the sake of covering all bases, it may have been a defective test.

As to your first question, no celexa will not show up on a drug test as a benzo even if there the tiniest amount of benzos in celexa drug tests only turn postive if there is a certain amount in your system. Second if there the test was positive for morphine then they most likely took it heroin and opiates are in there own classes on most drug tests. If you think there may have been a relapse think about the suboxone clinic it is a proven fact that suboxone heals receptors so eventually the person can get off with minimal side effects. No celexa can not make you positive for heroin. What you probably over heard was that the patient tested positive for heroin and celexa. There is an ask a doctor website they sometimes take a few days to get back to you but I promise celexa and heroin are in completely different drug classes and would not cause a false positive. Celexa and the generic brand will NOT cause you to test positive for illegal drugs. I am a retired police officer and was on the Celexa when my random number came up for testing and it was fine. I take 40 mg. a day and have for years. Then when I retired they take another one and again, NOTHING. It is performed in an independent lab and they only known my SS number. They could care less. I was taking the rounds to see what worked for me. This was the third SSRI. I've been hired taking it with drug screens for the Federal Government as well as private companies.

I take citalopram 10 mg and tested positive in the hospital for methamphetamine when I was getting my appendix removed. The only drugs I've ever done are alcohol and marijuana. And I failed a drug test for a job but they didn't tell me what it was that they found.

I know for a fact celexa will cause a false positive for benzo in some people cause it happend to me and i had to take a blood test and it was just celexa and it was confirmed by a doctor that it was the celexa causing the false positive

Ok, you just shared an extremely personal account with very little context towards EVERYONE. Your argument is that there is absolutely no way that Celexa can cause a false positive, and your supporting evidence is that you take Celexa yet have never experienced a false positive. (Not very convincing scientific evidence...) Also, you said that your tests were done in a laboratory. Laboratory tests are FAR LESS LIKELY to be inaccurate, further diminishing the validity of your claim. I failed a drug test because of Celexa, and the situation only resolved itself once I explained what medications I take and they had a more accurate test conducted. I hate when people spew close-minded ignorance. You are just one person in a huge world. Seven billion people all experience life from different perspectives, and most of them are convinced that their way of living life is the best way to live life. Keeping that in mind, why would you think that your one extremely specific experience could possibly disprove that of everyone else on the planet without a second doubt??? That's why all valid arguments are based off of cold, hard evidence and not specific instances and personal experience.

Yes it has. Or its original ingredients which may have been altered after my 13 yr old daughter was detained and it was thought this drug was an illegal substance in police test kits. We contacted the manufacturer, and they may have altered it now but in 2003/4 it most certainly tested positive, turning the test kit blue. I insisted the police test the actual prescribed pill and all heck broke loose when it came back blue because they were not certain how many children had been accused of drug charges due to their antidepressants.

I know this post is very old but I wanted to share this info because so many people who replied to thread are absolutely incorrect. Any medication that is an SSRI (Zoloft, Citalopram/Celexa, etc.) can create a false positive for Benzos on a standard urine test. How do I know? Because it has happened to me SEVERAL times. After my first false positive for benzos showed up, I did a lot of research to get to the bottom of it and there are countless studies that can be found on the web that confirm it. One study in particular found that taking an SSRI will cause a false positive for benzos as high as 20% of the time - that means if you take 5 UA's, chances are one of the tests will come back with a false positive but can be straightened out in the lab easily. I NEVER took drugs before and I never failed a drug test until I changed from Zoloft to Celexa...it was embarrassing because it was a group interview and everyone had to take a drug test before they even told you the details about the job... I was escorted out in front of everyone smh

Yep. I went off for a full week (hating my brain chemicals that week) due to a positive test at work. Forced my Dr into a drug screen after the full week, she declared me clean. Helped for my situation, hopefully yours.
Speaking from experience, DO NOT just stop taking, it's sucks. Wean off, and onto another SSRI Uptake, while informing whomever is testing AND reporting!! Good luck!
