Breakthrough Pain Medication Change

Updated

I am disabled in NE Florida and have been on a pain management regime for about 12 years now. I am currently prescribed and using two differing pain medications in this ongoing he'll of trying to stay ahead of the often unbearable pain. I take Morphine every 12 hours-ALWAYS, and Percocet when needed for the stingy pain days. I also down Ibuprofen like it's candy. Because of this, my stomach has become SEVERELY intolerant of it lately when I have to take the Percocet for breakthrough pain. My physician has attributed this to too much Acetaminophen given that it is added to the fact that I already take so much Ibuprofen as well regularly. He switched my breakthrough med from Percocet (10/325) to Oxycodone 5mg I capsules since it'll cut down on my Acetaminophen intake immensely. However, I thought all I've been hearing is that no pharmacy was filling Oxycodone anymore. Does anyone know is 5mg IR an exception? I have to fill my medicine tomorrow and I don't relish the thought of searching High Heaven for a new prescription to be filled. Thank you to anyone who can shed some light!

That should help. Just becareful. I'm in Tampa and have had horrible issues getting meds filled here since moving from Seattle. They moved me from norco to Tylenol 4 to ween down but found I have stomach issues from taking the t4. Just see what works best for you. I have to be honest, the withdraw part is the worst with the laws for filling scripts here in FL!!

@Jay,

As far as I can tell, the whole situation with pharmacies not filling certain narcotic prescriptions for various reasons is going on nationwide. But I think the idea of 5mg oxycodone being easier to get filled is probably a logical one since that's considered to be a low dose. Unfortunately the only way to find out for sure would be to try and have the prescription filled. It's sad that even with a doctor's "permission slip" we still can't predict if a pharmacy will have it in stock or at least be willing to order it on your doctor's behalf... If you ever did run into any issues with refills maybe you can at least work with your doctor on switching over to something else that pharmacies usually tend to have on hand more regularly; whichever pain medication that might be. I wish could offer more advice but Lilone (post #1) is right about just seeing what works best for you first and foremost.

Hope this helps!
