Bendectin Side Effects

I took Bendectin in 1978 for 7 months of morning sickness. My daughter has Addisons disease, an auto-immune condition, and am wondering if this drug has caused her side effects. How can I get more info and any recourse I may have. Her life expectancy will most likely be shortened. She is in constant pain and fatigued.

Hi Maureen,

I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter! Are you referring to Benedictine? I did find some information stating that there is a possibility that Benedictine could have been the cause of multiple birth defects, however studies don't really make it clear. I'll link you to a thread where others discuss this same topic- you may be able to find more answers to your questions their; since I don't personally have experience with this medication.

Bendectin is vitamin B6 and doxylamine (an anti-histamine very similar to benadryl.) It is no longer produced, but you can still take unisom and vitamin b6 separately and have the same medication as bendectin. Bendectin was a very adequate treatment for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy before newer medications like phenergan or zofran were developed. It was studied extensively because mothers taking Bendecitn were noted to have babies with birth defects. It was shown that the rate of birth defects in mothers taking Bendectin was EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE GENERAL POPULATION. The drug is now known as a "litogen" because it brought about litigation. There is an overwhelming amount of data showing this drug has no affect on birth defects.

My son is now 32. When I was pregnant with him I was very I'll and the doctor prescribed Bendectin. It is the equivalent of thalidamide of the 30's and 40's. He has a milder form of spina bifida. Always in horrible pain..always. He needs help desperately.

My son is 43 now... in 1973 while pregnant I took that horrendous drug for prolonged nausea & vomiting not stopping until my 6 th or 7 th month. He was born with "Severe abnormalities of his entire urinary track. He had complicated surgery when he was 3 and has never had a time without pain & suffering. I tell everyone I know to never take a drug while pregnant. The drug makers of be section ruined many innocent lives

My son is now 45. He was a twin (which was spontaneously miscarried) at 3 months. I had been taking Bendectin since my first month of pregnancy and continued for the first trimester. My son is suffering from Laurence-Moon Syndrome (which has MANY issues, including retinitis pigmentosa. Could this be related to the Bendectin?

I also have a son who is a twin with spina bifida occulta. They are 39 now. During a conversation with him he is constantly trying to stretch, pound, pull, roll or twist in such a way that it relieves pain. He has never had a pain-free day in his life. I took bendectin from about 2.5 months off and on until I had the boys. I'm very suspicious whether Bendectin was the culprit. It's a life of pain for him and heartache for those of us who know and love him.

I also have been diagnosed with primary adrenal insufficiency and addisons disease. And guess what med my mother took when she was pregnant? You guessed it - Bendectin.

I also have addisons disease. My mother took that mess when pregnant w.me. until she found out what it could do.. I have had issues all my life....with my health.

As a mother of a daughter born in 1977, with birth defects and her subsequent death, I say to you BS. I know without a shadow of doubt that my taking BENDECTIN caused this tradgety!

Hello. My son is 36 and has major mental issues. He is bi polar and has so many mental issues and depends on drugs and psychirosits to perscribe drugs for hm to get over stress, anxiety and throwing up in the AM due to stress.
