Be Very Cautious Mixing Alcohol With Viibryd!! (Page 3)

Updated

This is a warning to you all... A little bit about me first: I'm 6'3" and only 130 pounds. Naturally I am very susceptible to side effects of any drug. I also didn't have my first taste of alcohol until October 2011, which is when I turned 23.

Throughout November 2011 I took Cymbalta. I also drank occasionally, but not often and not much. Cymbalta gave me a lot side effects such as an upset stomach, dizzyness, inability to sleep, etc. About mid-December I switched to Prozac, and took it through February. Throughout this time I drank a lot. Very often, and sometimes I'd get incredibly drunk, but I didn't have any bad experiences with mixing Prozac and alcohol. At the beginning of March 2012 I started taking Viibryd because Prozac wasn't giving me the results I desired. The first time I drank while taking Viibryd was on March 14th. That night was also my first and only ride in an ambulance. I drank a good bit of alcohol that night, but it wasn't the most I've ever drank. I also drank a little too fast. I ended up throwing up everything, then stomach juices, then dry heaving all the way to the hospital.

Since then I've only gotten drunk once while on Viibryd, and I did it slowly. I took about 10 shots of vodka but over a four hour period. I didn't feel any bad effects that night, and thought that maybe if I was just careful with my drinking that I could still get drunk while taking Viibryd. But the next day I was miserable. After havingstopped drinking at 11pm the night before, I was still drunk at 8am and unable to drive. The entire day I was sick and on the verge of passing out. I couldn't function at all. And the effects even carried over slightly to the following day.

I would just like to warn you all. It wouldn't suprise me at all if someone could end up dead due to an accident of mixing Viibryd and alcohol...

My GOD.. you poor people! I'm serious. This Viibryd sounds wicked! I wouldn't take it if someone offered me money! I know ya'll probably know this but you DO know that alcohol is a depressant, right? And Daniel thank God you're still with us. I know all about antidepressants, have taken them on and off over the years and NOW I am ADAMANTLY opposed to putting ANY psychotropic drug in my body. Except Valium which I've been on for over 10 years. I am not clinically depressed, but do go through periods of situational depression which I think would serve me better for talk therapy instead of going to see a shrink, have me diagnosed with some non-existent "mental disease", drugging me up and effing me up with all the side effects. Once psychiatrists come up with a medical test for diagnosing psychiatric illness (such as ADHD, ADD, depression, anxiety, or a "chemical imbalance" in my brain will I even consider them. But that won't happen because there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes these things. This is ALL ONLY MY OPINION, so if those taking antidepressants feel better, then do what's best for you. I am only sharing an experience I don't have much time to go into a lot of detail but I had a little over two years ago a horrific experience at the hands of psychiatrists. I've done lots of research and this is why I'm against the whole Big Pharma-Psychiatric $$$$ multi-billion a year industry. MY predicament is my Internist has bugged me for 2-1/2 years to see a psychiatrist. Bribed me in fact. Pain meds ok BUT if you get your anxiety under control you may not be in so much pain. I did, they put me on Celexa (just because I mentioned having heard of it before), all BS. Took it for about a month, hated it PLUS it was against my principles and what I believe in so I stopped. I have FINALLY after 5 years of looking since moving where I am I had my first visit with a new, real Pain Management group today. I was just a few days away from having surgery on my neck due to two herniated discs. Last Friday my LOWER back went out and I was in so much agony my surgeon took me off surgical schedule for next week. Thank GOD! Have had four back surgeries between 2002-2004. I need a couple MRI's, he prescribed Oxycodone and Methadone as my Internist has done the past year but this new guy will now take over my pain issues. One condition he said I need to see a psychiatrist before next visit in a month. WTF! See a shrink or good bye. Anyway, this is all I can say right now but will leave my email address in the event this thread continues as I want to read everyone's stories. Sorry if this seems all over the place, I just had to click on the link in my email when I read Daniel's initial posting from March. I'm just getting stiff, back hurts and I need to get up and move. Daniel, Daniel, Daniel. You were lucky my dear. I'm a Grandmother "Grammie" to my grandbabies so I can call you "my dear". Now my pain doc is bribing me dammit! I'll work something out. Klonopin, Ativan or better still Xanax for anxiety fine. Antidepressants - NOT fine. Oh, @ Rascal... you said "I notice I'm getting more angry (which the doctor says is great--that I'm not depressing)". Just how angry are you getting? As opposed to how depressed you are/were? Just make sure you direct your anger at the right thing. Now me, I'd go after the shrink. KIDDING!!! Feel better peeps. MsTweetie

Mike, I have the same symptoms if I miss a dose by little as an hour - no drinking or alcohol involved. It's "normal" withdrawal symptoms, google it. I asked my psychiatrist as well. As soon as I take my medication and it kicks in, I'm fine.

I have been on Viibryd for around 3 months now and I have noticed a huge difference in my attitude and my ass..My attitude towards everything became positive...excpet towards my weight gain. I crave sweets as well which I normally don't like. I have night sweats if I miss a pill. Starting to wonder about his pill. If I start hating myself won't I be back to my old self???

In response to Maria, and many other about the added weight from Viibryd:

I shot up 15 pounds when I started taking Viibryd, and wasn't a big deal for me because I'm really skinny anyway. The fat however, was pretty grotesque. It was very pudgy and all went to my stomach. But anyway, I stopped taking Viibryd in July and now, in December my weight has gone back down 15 pounds. It may be coincidence but it seems that I've got my old stomach back. So I guess I'm saying there is hope that if you stopped taking Viibryd now you could lose the weight naturally. But again, it coudl be coincidental. I obviously can't promise anything.

I am trying to get off, I do not want to be on any medication that has such terrible withdrawals. I don't even know why I am depressed anymore. I lowered my dose from 40 to 20mg last few days, felt terrible today wanted to cry but had no specific reasons? As for weight gain, this medication did not efect my weight at all, actually i was going to the gym and whatnot built quite the 8-pack abs. Now 3 months out of the gym and not dieting, for the first time in my life my stomach is unnatractive and kind of fat. But I blame it on the late night munchies from smoking. add me on facebook I would like to talk to more of you about it {edited for privacy}.

Be extremely cautious while drinking and on Viibryd. I'm 18, a freshman in college, and decided to go out and drink, warning my friends to keep an eye on me because I didn't know how I would react. The first time I had a four loko, some mixed drinks, and like 3 shots. I felt great, woke up the next morning still drunk. I didn't even get that bad of a hangover when I sobered up.
I drank another night and felt good still. About a week later while back in school I felt very stressed and anxious so we upped my dose from 30 to 40 mg.
Then while back I drank some more, getting drunk very very fast. Now, after it has been a week since I last drank I'm very anxious, mood swings, and jumpy. Feeling very depressed at night, not eating much. I'm not sure if its my finals or the meds. I think my blood pressure is high too and I feel a bit reckless. Going to the doctors when I get home. Hopefully he can tell me something I can do. I would like to be able to drink and not worry about my meds.

I have been taking Viibryd for 19 months now. I didn't have a single drink for the first 15 months, but have begun to drink again in the last 4 months. I have not had any kind of reaction that everyone is talking about! At worst, I have a hangover that I would have from drinking too much anyway, and at best, I've actually had a good night's sleep. I am wondering if people are taking the medication in the morning, or at night. My doctor said to absolutely take it in the morning, and I'm wondering if that is the difference? I feel fine, and am surprised to read other peoples' accounts of having such trouble with this medication. I am taking 40 mg. daily for panic disorder, and it has worked very, very well! Please let me know if you are taking this at night, because you might want to switch to daytime.

I've been taking Viibryd for about 4 months now, and I love it! I'm using it in a combination with Wellbutrin XL 300mg.

For those just starting Viibryd, I'd recommend asking your doctor for a starter pack, it gradually increases the dose to let your body get used to the new medication.

I've drank occasionally while on this medication but always in light amounts. I'm a small person anyway 5'0 and 115 pounds, so I watch my alcohol consumption. I haven't had any problems with hard liquor or wine, I think the key is moderation.

I can't take it in the morning - I have to eat a lot of food before I take it and even then I feel sick for hours.

I too wake up in the middle of the night extremely hungry. I have actually goten up in the middle of the night to have a piece of toast. I also found that this medication made me feel foggy. Needless to say, I decided to discontinue Viibryd and change to Lexapro.

I just started taking Viibryd a few days ago. Havent had too many side effects. Just an upset stomach. That may be because I take it on an empty stomach. I tend to go out drinking 2-3 days a week. Everything you guys are saying is really scaring me : ( Also, I have epilepsy and I keep reading you are not supposed to be taking this medicine if you have a seizure disorder. I was prescribed this by my neurologist who diagnosed me with epilepsy. I am confused by this....

I have been on Viibryd for a few about 4 months now, only 10mg (combined with 75mg of Wellbutrin taken 3x a day) and I absolutely love it. I don't feel foggy. I don't feel "fake" happy. I just feel completely normal again.

I also feel like I actually CRAVE alcohol way more than I used to. I'm not skinny... 5'7 and like 165lbs (I'm a female) and I can easily drink a 6pack of beer or an entire bottle of white wine a night and feel completely fine the next day. Has anyone else actually wanted to drink MORE since starting Viibryd?

With the d_ope'rative word being "mixing"! Many folk nowadays are as equally "mixed-up" in their thinking as are their thinks..err..drinks! Why do people consume alcohol? Presumably to place themselves into a state[stupor?] of feeling better in themselves, exactly where the alcohol -- once consumed -- ends up, in themselves. This same desire of wanting to feel better is the reason that people feel the need -- and are advi$ed -- to consume drugs[whether they're prescribed or not], so why doesn't every container of alcohol have a wise warning on its label clearly stating that consumers of alcohol should not in any circumstances take any drugs whilst they are consuming alcohol? If the alcohol is going to make them veritably feel better then there'll be no need to throw any drugs into the "mix"! If either one[alcohol or drug] was a necesssary adjunct to the other then they'd be already premixed for you in the right proportion to save you the bother of having to concoct it yourself, then when you started to feel a bit down in health, and thought that by taking a "ground powder" you'd soon come good, you could just take some "t_alc'ohol"[reg.] instead...to prevent any possibility of your ever biting the "dust"!

My son is 23, 5ft 11inches tall and weighs 145 lbs. He is on 20 mg of viibryd. He works full time and goes to school 3 evenings a week. He started drinking about a half a pint of rum per night about 2 months ago. Tonight at about 1am he was at his desk and passed out and was unresponsive, I called an ambulance and he was taken to the hospital, his blood alcohol was 258, is it possible that the Viibryd somehow elevates the alcohol content? The Dr said that if he had consumed much more alcohol death would be a real possibility. I no longer allow alcohol in my home. He also suffers from severe hangovers the next day, when he gets hungry, he has to eat immediately or he is in agony. We are going to keep a close eye on him to be sure that he does not drink. This was a very scary situation for my wife and I and I hope someone reads this and realizes the danger, it's no joke

Anyone who drinks 10 shots in 4 hours will still feel drunk the next morning. That is a BAC of .194 which is more than double the legal limit for driving. I'm not contradicting your opinion that mixing alcohol and Viibryd is dangerous, but you drank a dangerous amount for any person.

Hey everyone, my name is Stephen, I've been taking viibryd since March 2011, I started the 10mg for a week, then went to the 20mg for a week then the 40mg tablets. I know sooo much about this medication. Before I got on viibryd, I had extreme anxiety from smoking spice. Thats a whole different subject :)..But anyways, I Do experience stomach nausea, I havent vomited ever, I figured out that a lot of the way this medication works is the type of food you eat determines how your body metabolizes the medication. Also you must eat atleast 300 calories with the medication or your body will not absorb properly. Also fruits and vegetables act as a natural serotonin inhibitor. Your body needs to have the proper nutrition to minimize side effects. I found this out when I got a job at whole foods market. I eat nothing but healthy foods and do not drink anymore, I had a severe hyperventilation attack the day after I drank only a 6pk of budlight in 3 or so hrs. Alcohol strips your body of nutrition, and strips the viibryd from your body, so that's why the next day you feel do bad. Its like not taking the medication at all for a day. I have zero side effects since I changed my diet. I used to get bad stomach cramps, dizziness upon standing, irregular heart beat, heart palpitations, cold sweats at night, and trouble sleeping. Now im so happy:).. Again! You must eat atleast 300 calories with viibryd or you will definatly have stomach pains. Food and water minimize the effects, the reason for this is, your brain draws 80 percent of all serotonin from your stomach (Gut). Your body can only produce so much serotonin without food, once it runs out, your stomach starts to hurt because its lacking serotonin, serotonin also controls vomiting!! I read a lot on wikipedia and learned quite a bit about serotonin and dopamine production in the body.

I have gained weight too, and this drug was supposed to be weight neutral. I am almost positive the drug is to blame because I have been exercising and staying strictly on Weight Watchers and the weight keeps inching up instead of going down which is really unusual for me. Gained about 10 pounds in 6 months and I am going to quit taking it (gradually). Don't think it is helping that much, and I hate the weight gain! (on another site someone said they gained 85 pounds in six months - hard to believe, but I do believe it puts on the pounds).
