Updated

I am taking Pradax at the moment, but I understand that it can cause joint swellings ( which I am having). I understand there is a new drug out for treatment to atrofib

Pradaxa is the newest that I'm aware of, it was just approved back in 2010.

I am not sure what all may be available for you, since I'm based in the U.S. and going by our information here.

As to the joint pain and swelling, that is a potentially serious side effect and you should contact your doctor about it immediately to have it checked out.

Does anyone know of a newer medication that's available?

There are actually quite a few anti-arrhythmic medications that are often prescribed to help prevent future episodes of atrial fibrillation. Commonly used medications include:

Amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone)
Dronedarone (Multaq)
Propafenone (Rythmol)
Sotalol (Betapace)
Dofetilide (Tikosyn)
Flecainide (Tambocor)

I don't know of any "new" medications on the market, but if someone else has more info on a particular name or manufacturer, please do post back!

NOTE: all prescription drugs carry the risk of side effects, so if you want to try and avoid most of them I'd encourage you to be open to natural options as well. Usually heart conditions are at least in part, directly related to one's dietary habits. Eating more fresh fruits and veggies throughout the day is probably going to be much more beneficial for overall heart health in the long run.

I hope this helps!
