Am I Taking Enough Cloraz? Can I Take More?

Updated

I'm 68, no one so far can control my blood pressure.
244/161 the highest so far. Just left hospital for three
days. At my request, doctor gave me Cloraz Dipot to
ease my anxiety of taking blood pressure, and taking the
new medicine. My other medicine made me sick, ended
up calling 911. My problem? I can't tell I took Cloraz.
Shouldn't I? It's 3.7mg. Will taking two hurt?
I take: Lisinopril, 20mg. once a day
Metoprolol tart, 50mg, twice daily
Hydralazine 25mg, three times daily for bl. pressr.
And it's still just as high at times. They don't know what
to do. Sent me home. To die? You think? Any help?
They say my heart is fine. Had stress test, etc. At St.
Anne's hospital.
Thank you.
Sage

I wouldn't suggest changing the dosage, without your doctors approval.

Clorazepate is a Benzodiazepine derivative, used to treat anxiety and nervous disorders, however, these are also known to help lower blood pressure, in some people, because they also cause depression of the central nervous system, so it may be a beneficial medication to you in several ways.

Now, my next question to both of you is what other medications have they tried and what other testing have they done? And have they checked your sodium and potassium levels?

Some cases of resistant high blood pressure can be caused by kidney problems. When I was in the hospital and mine wasn't responding to the medications they were giving me, that is the first thing they checked. I was sent down for an MRI to check my kidneys.

Mine turned out to be fine and we just hadn't found the right combination of medications to bring my down, but it is definitely something that should be taken under consideration and tested for.

Sage, you definitely sound like you are in a very similar situation to what I was in and, after having no luck with the several hospitals in Pennsylvania, because they just kept giving me the same medications, which made me very ill and didn't control my blood pressure, I finally suffered congestive heart failure.

However, I was very fortunate that this happened in the state of Washington, close to a much better hospital, with better doctors. When they discovered the problems I had with Lisinopril and Metoprolol, we just kept trying different medications, until we found out what worked for me.

Now, I am out of cardiac danger, stable and there are days my medications make my BP go too low, so we have to deliberately try to bring it up.

There are well over 100 blood pressure medications on the U.S. market, so there are many different ones and different combinations that they can try.

Just for an example, the combination that finally worked for me was Atacand, Spironolactone and Carvedilol.

And that is just some of the other options that are available. It can be a trial and error thing, but you really need to find a doctor that is going to be proactive and keep trying, until they find the right ones that help you.

Another medication that helps many people with resistant hypertension is Clonidine, but for some reason many doctors don't even think of using it.
