Actifed Cold And Allergy Availability (Page 5)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I always found Actifed to be the only cold medicine that worked for me. Now I cant find it at any of my local drug stores even behind the counter. Is it still available? Even the pharmacist I talked to thought it was on the shelf and then realized they quit carrying it.

Not only do I find Wal-Act (sold at Walgreens, behind counter, drivers license required -- no prescription) to be every bit as effective as the Actifed we all remember so well, I recently discovered that my teenage son who has suffered more severe allergies than I ever had and been prescribed numerous more expensive medications for years, reacts quite well to the Wal-Act too. It finally occurred to me to have someone with similar genetic make-up try the product that works for his old man. Lo and behold, no more prescription drugs for him. Something to consider for any of you with offspring.

Love this forum. In my 50's now. When younger, had total of 4 years of desensitization shots for allergies, having reacted to 54 of 55 skin tests. And ACTIFED only med that ever helped me. Later in Coast Guard Aviation, Actifed considered downing drug, no-flying. In order to get waiver, doctor set off my allergies with swab in nose, took actifed, and then put square pegs in square holes and round in round, and other sobriety tests. Always had to get prescription for Actifed years ago, till it was sold over the counter, which helped but not as good as prescription ones. Bought couple packs last year at local CVS in Eastern North Carolina. Was somewhat shocked today when told it's discontinued.

Google did not help in answering "why" discontinued, till I ran into this forum and kept reading. Saw elsewhere its patent had run out, and figure Marketing thought it'd no longer be profitable against aftermarket competition. (That's just my take on all I've read so far.)

Going to try Wal_Act asap. Only question is for MeNiel Marketing. Seems the recognition brand name, "Actifed," would be enough to keep it going. Maybe there's on-line petition we all could sign to get it back?

Recently returned from the UK with 8 packages of "multi action Actifed". Twelve pills to a package available over the counter together with a grilling from the pharmacist. Only one package to be sold at a time. Fortunately there are MANY chemists/pharmacies in London. Cost? About $4.90 a package or about $0.80 per pill. We treat them like gold, doling them out only for the very worst days.

I found an Ingles pharmacy in Ga. that sells Aprodine. It works great, but I'm made to feel like some sort of criminal or drug user for asking for it. I have allergies year round and sometimes take it 3 x a day. 48 tabs won't last long at that rate. Still, I'm nowhere close to exceeding rec. dosage. I asked my Dr. for a prescription to make purchasing easier. The pharmacist tried to fill it with some pseudophedrine free crap that I knew wouldn't work. So much for helping.

The original, pre-2006 formulation of Actifed is now being sold under the name Aprodine.

I previously was taking Actifed for sinus & cold. Now it is no longer available in Canada.

Is there another drug that has replaced Actifed?

Every free society economy is based on supply and demand. The intersection of these two dictates the price. Nowadays, the DRUG CARTELS do not respect the laws of free economy and the ultimate care of the consumer/patient. The DRUG CARTELS have learned to manipulate the laws of supply and demand. If a drug is so competitive, effective and efficient, the only way to get rid of it is to stop the supply and take it off the shelves. When there is no SUPPLY , there will be no DEMAND. Such market manipulation is a very dangerous practice for the economy as a whole. When you hold the supply , you kill the demand , but also you kill competitiveness and quality of products. In conclusion , market subversion will lead at the end to DRUG CARTELS bankruptcies.

Have spent hours over past few days searching various pharmacies for good ole Actifed or store brand versions only to find no sign of any. Finally came online to research and found some comfort in this community of allergy sufferers who, like myself, have discovered over the years that Sudafed and all the other products don't work any bit as effectively as Actifed. Remember first discovering the miracle product in the form of Wal-Act decades ago when living in Chicago. Delighted to discover that Walgreens continues to sell the product with the original formula at a reasonable price. Just picked up a box from pharmacist (48 tabs for $7.49) and only needed to show a drivers license. Curious to see how it compares to the reformulated version I've been taking in recent years and have just now run out of and can not longer replace.

Pharmacist at Walgreen's told me Actifed is no longer made and Wal-Act house brand was a replacement. Same as other posts in this thread. Tried it last night and it worked wonderfully. Just like Actifed.

I have talked to a few Pharmacists lately trying to find Actifed and have been told that you can get Co-Actifed??? What is this??? I was told Actifed with codeine? Why would anyone with post-nasal drip need codeine????

Walgreens still sells their brand called Wal-Act which is the closet thing to Actifed i've ever found. My allergies are horrible too and only Actifed ever did it for me! But since it's been discotinued i found that Wal-Act wrks just as well for me! They sel it to you at the pharmacy dept. but you have to show them your license or ID.

Two things to report:

1. A friend recently returned from Oregon with a generic CVS product called, simply, Cold and Allergy Relief. On the box is says "Compare to the active ingredients in Actifed Cold and Allergy". And yes, as required by law, it does not contain pseudoephedrine. That said, our family DOES get relief from it. Not quite Actifed but better than any of the (expensive) brand name products mentioned by BB. The active ingredients are chlorpheniramine maleate and phenylephrine. It's cheap but not available on-line.

2. As promised in another post, I ordered Multi-action Actifed from an on-line UK pharmacy (but mailed from Hungary...go figure). It is made by McNeil/Johnson and Johnson and is the original triprolidine hydrochloride/pseudoephedrrine hydrochloride formula. And it works. It is also (as BB suggested) ridiculously expensive per 12 tablet package (only one package can be bought at a time) once delivery costs are added on.

My personal solution: I shall be in the UK in October and will wander from chemist to chemist, buying one package at a time.

The drug companies that manufactured the original formulation of Actifed (pseudoephedrine with triprolidine) have discontinued it because it is used by drug dealers to make illegal methamphetamine (crank) in the United States. The problem got so bad that the U.S. Congress passed a federal law back in 2006 in the States that required people buying it over the counter to have to give their drivers' license numbers to the pharmacist and were restricted to only two boxes at a time. Then Pfizer stopped making the original formula in the U.S. at all, and I had to buy it from online pharmacies in Canada. This is the only place I could find it -- until the regular pharmacies I bought it from stopped carrying it and now I can't find it in Canada at all. I have found only a few online drug stores in the U.K. that sell it, if you are able to find one that will sell you more than the one box limit. Ridiculous, if you consider the overseas shipping cost you will pay. Little by little all the supplies of Actifed online are disappearing. Actifed is the only antihistamine that has ever worked for me. I have literally tried every other OTC allergy product out there (Claritin, Zyrtec, Sudafed, Benadryl, etc. etc.) and NONE of them do a d***n thing for me. I have even tried prescription Allergan for nothing. The people who legitimately used Actifed for nasal congestion have been screwed by the meth-heads who have ruined the availability of this product for everyone.

I finally got around to ordering (from Canada) some Wal-Act online and this is what I found: "Not sold on-line". The reviews online confirms to me that this is the Actifed that we've been looking for. The Walgreen Wal-Act URL:

Thank you for posting this question. The people who replied to you seem to know more about how to find the original Actifed than people on any other site I have visited.

It is interesting to me to hear that McNeil manufactures it though. I was unable to find the original Actifed (allergies.emedtv.com/actifed/original-actifed.html) in the US , so my family has been ordering it from Northwest Pharnacy in Canada. The product we received was packaged by Glaxo Smith Kline.

When we tried to place an order with them last week, we were informed that the original Actifed is no longer sold in Canada now. Thankfully - after reading though all the replies to your post - I have learned that Wal-Act does indeed have the same ingredients as the original Actifed. I just wonder how long that will be the case :(
