Accutane And Infertility (Page 6)

Updated

I took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.

I feel very sad for those families who lost someone due to suicide, but I have to feel that people were not paying attention to the GIANT warning of suicidal tendencies. I was on it 3 times and never had the negative side effects like most of you. But I too have noticed some changes as I have aged. They never did list infertility as a side effect but I too think I am experiencing the same issues as most of the people have posted. After 4 years off accutane and birth control, normal periods and ovulation, all levels normal, I was unable to have any children. The sad part is even had I known that, at age 15...when you are afraid to leave the house, hide from photos with friends and family, and dont even want to look in the mirror, you arent thinking about babies and your far off future. Many of us are thinking about clearing our skin and scarring. We just want to be normal! What we also need to keep in mind is that these companies ideas of long term studies are usually 3-6 months...not years or decades. If they did that the product would never come out...

Generic accutane helps to deal with severe cystic acne, also known as nodular acne. It is normally advised by skin specialists after other acne medications or antibiotics have been unsuccessful.

I took five rounds of accutane from age 15 to 20, 1996 to 2001. I'm now 30 and my mother regrets ever having put me on such a poweful medicine. My skin (everywhere) looks wonderful. Since taking accutane, I've been diagnosed w/PCOS, had irregular, light or no periods for extended periods of time, have been diagnosed as insulin resistant, had numerous stomach problems (I was never sick as a child), my skin & lips especially are still constantly dry, have lots of body hair, but especially dark facial hair (I would have a goatee if I didn't pluck every day). My mother and i have wondered for years if these problems were linked to accutane. Its the only medicine I ever took before having these problems. I, to everyone's surprise,
conceived at 28 and had a healthy baby. Since birth, it's back to irregular or no periods (even with chlomid & birth control). My case is not as severe as many posts I've read & I'm very sorry for those who've experienced infertility. I agree with so many of you...THERE's GOT TO BE A CONNECTION! If only I'd known that irregular hormone levels, possible fertility issues, IBS, and embarrassing body hair accompanied accutane, I may not have taken it. If anyone finds a connection between accutane & early menopause, please post it. Or any other health issues. The more I'm reading, the more unlikely I feel I'll be able to conceive again.

I took accutane a few years ago and now have no periods at all I also have horrible joint pain almost constantly I have been to many different doctors for both these problems and have mentioned being on accutane but they always seem to try to avoid looking into it further and prescribe me birthcontrol to regulate my periods and tylonol for my joints. I also have the symptoms of ibs but my doctors never diagnose me with it and always put me on nasty fiber powders and stool softeners. Idk what I need to be telling my doctors or what I need to do to get something done to help me. If you have any advice its greatly appriciated.

Hi Erin, I posted on here recently about PCOS too, but just a few months ago started having symptoms of IBS now also, and doctors don't know what the stomach issues are about. I'm wondering if that too is accutane, is yours similar to IBS as well?

Chelsea...my sister, not a doc, came up with the IBS diagnosis. As I posted, before accutane, I was never sick. After, constant stomach problems. Very sensitive to lots of foods. Thought I might be lactose intolerant. Have nausea & vomiting more frequently than a normal person. Diareah too. I've been seen a doctor about my gall bladder. Been hospitalized for ulcer. When I saw commercials about law suits concerning accutane/IBS/Khrons, I thought about a connection, since I've had symptoms of both. There be no connection, but I can tell you, my body/health have not been the same since finishing my accutane treatment. Ever heard of any connections between early menopause & accutane? Thanks for your post.

Hi Sara,
I took accutane when i was 16 years old, i was taking 80mg per day for 8 mos and then experience ICS (inter-cranial Swelling or "Brain Swelling") which was one of the severe side effects of taking accutane. 5 years later at the age of 21 i was diagnosed with PCOS, before taking accutane i never had any menstrative problems. I know have all the side effects of severe PCOS, i have excessive hair loss, excessive facial hair, worse cystic acne then before, gallstones resulting my gallbladder to be removed, along with constant UTI (urinary track infections) and almost constant neck and back pain. I am now 23 and am faced with the fact that my options of being able to concieve are about 2% out of 200, and its devestating to me and my family. Ive been researching for the past two years to find more people like myself in the same situation. I would absolutely love to place a class action suit against Accutane for this tragedy that was bestoyed upon me! Please email me with any helpful information. I would appreciate anything you or anyone else on this posting site has to say. Thank You
Breanna Zimmer

I took Accutane as a teenager. I am now 28 and have had 2 unexplained miscarriages and am still childless. I have not been diagnosed as infertile but I am very scared that I will be. I have not had any problems getting pregnant and am currently 6 weeks pregnant. I have been terrified the entire time; pretty much just waiting to miscarry. It is a horrible feeling and I know it can't be healthy to stress this much. I have always wondered if it could be the Accutane. I would have never taken it if I knew that infertility could be a side effect. If anyone decides to start a class action suite against Accutane for infertility or miscarriage PLEASE let me know. I would like to be a part of it.
Thanks

Vitamin A (of which accutane is an analog of) works in synergy with vitamin D therefore high doses of vitamin A deplete vitamin D. Vitamin D is also needed for ovulation and to enable the body to use progesterone this is the most important hormone to maintain pregnancy and for conception. I saw a study about identical twins, one who liked the sunbathe and the other didn't the one who was sunbathing was ovulating and the other woman wasn't as soon as she stated supplementing with vitamin D she began ovulating this is vitamin D3 in relatively high amount or get vitamin D from the sun. Also look into bio identical progesterone therapy. This is a hormone that is identical to the that your body produces and is very important for fertility.

Has anyone heard of a link between accutane and joint issues? In addition to fertility problems, of which i have posted about in the past, i have chronic joint pain. I've had back surgery twice, i'm only 36, and i now need 2 epidorals. I have 2 herniated discs in my neck and 3 in my lower back. All, I am being told are degenerative.

Maggi.. Accutane can cause severe joint pain ad does my son whom used this 13 months ago. It also causes bones to fuse together. Please check out this site for long term effects and a posting by Scott who's son is suffering sice having taken this Poision ! Hope things get better for everyone that has taken this so called miracle drug. The only miracle is for the drug companies as they make you ill from one drug in order to give you others to supress youe pain or what ever illness you get from this. There are 152 side effects apparently caused by Accutane, Amnesteen, Isotretionoin or what ever generic name they give it . As there are about a dozen different names for it.

I have also been diagnosed with Infertility issues. I took Accutane for 5 months about 6 years ago (right before I got married) and we started trying right away for kids but still not succeeded. We've been thru all the treatments including Invitro- they have come to the conclusion that my eggs are just not healthy and they have no idea why. Everything else looks great as I'm pretty healthy and work out regulary. But Accutane drys you out from the inside out- everywhere. I believe this has something to do with our Infertility. I contacted a lawyer and he said as of right now, there's no link between Accutane and Infertility but to keep looking into it. I truely pray something IS proven somehow or enough people speak up for them to HAVE to do something about it.

Everything started in Oct 2011, I was finally diagnosed with pyoderma faciale Dec 23 2011 after several months of bacterim, steriod 6 pack, shots to the face 4 times etc.

Its now Jan 22 2012 (3-4 months after initial breakout). My face finally looks 'normal' but still have some acne.

All the docs can tell me is to go on Accutane/birth control/steriod for 5-6 months. I have never been on anything before not even birth control.

Im VERY hesitant but what if all of this causes scarring on my face or comes back?

SHOULD I TAKE ACCUTANE?

I was put on 3 separate rounds of Accutane around the age of 15. I have dealt with various fertility issues since the age of 27. I am now 36. My diagnoses are many including diminished ovarian reserve, short luteal phase, endometriosis, and small ovaries. We have been trying to conceive for nine years. After Clomid, IUI and various injectibles proved unsuccessful, our RE suggested donor eggs....stating that I had very few, poor quality eggs remaining. We were not able to attempt IVF. He suggested I was born with very small ovaries. My Mother has often suggested the link between Accutane and infertility, but we never had any proof. I was able to successfully conceive through embryo adoption and plan to try for a second child through embryo adoption this Spring. I would love to hear of any lawsuit related to the link between Accutane and infertility.
