Accutane And Infertility (Page 4)

Updated

I took accutane almost 14 years ago as a teenager. I am now a 32 year old woman who has just been diagnosed with infertility that they believe is linked to autoimmune issues. I truly believe that accutane is the cause of this; from the research that I have done it seems that accutane has been linked to other thyroid-related diseases, but that they have not yet been able to prove a link between accutane and infertility. There are, however, actually more people like me out there than I originally thought. Being diagnosed with ovarian dysfunction has been a horrific, horrific blow. And while there was plenty of information about accutane and birth defects, no one ever mentioned a possibility of future infertility. I was a teenager! This is a tragedy and I believe something should be done about it. If you too have been affected diagnosed with infertility and have taken accutane, please email me. There are plenty of suits against accutance. If there are enough of us, we can come together to do the medical research and get the help we now need.

I have been trying to get pregnant for two years now. I have several problems: prolactimia, endometriosis, and infrequent ovulation. I took accutane when I was 16 for 6 months (~1991). As a teenager I remember asking my dermotologist if accutane could cause cancer, as I remember reading through the literature very completly and the thing that stood out to me (that was scary) was that it changed the structure of your skin cells; however I thought it was obvious that it affects all of your cells if it causes such horrific birth defects. He said if anything it would help prevent skin cancer in the future. But I'm like most of you--I never thought about it causing infertility as I was 16 yrs old and getting pregnant was the furthest thing from my mind. And I don't recall, at that time, anything in the literature about it's relation to infertility. I feel like my infertility problems could possibly be due to accutane. I'm not so interested in suing someone, I just want to find solid research on the subject so I can get some answers for myself. Have any of you found any solid research related to accutane causing infertility??

i would say the risk outways the benefit.. A lot of people have effects later in life but don't always realise they are connected. Eat healthily and maybe look at natural ways to look after yourself. Accutane is Not worth the Risk !

Thanks Mitch, I also want to say i hate how people can just give u some medication to take it just shows most people in the world dont give a crap so we have to be careful in what kind of medications we get subscribed by our doctor, because remember every person that goes and buys that med they are getting money for it ... i may be wrong but just saying!

I too am diagnosed with infertility and was told that i have pcos. I have tried numerous attempts of IUI with clomid and metformin, however i havent conceived at all. I am now thinking that it is from accutane after watching the commercials. We should ban together to fight this.

I took Accutane in highschool and my body has never been the same. I have dealt with infirtility as well. It seems like ALL my tissues have been affected. My sinuses, skin, and eyes are all dried out and sensitive, so I don't think it would be a far reach to believe that my reproductive organ tissues may be affected too. Before I became pregnant with my daughter, my periods got lighter and lighter until I didn't have one anymore. My uterus was not creating enough lining. I regulated my hormones with the pill and got pregnant, but then experienced restricted bloodflow to the baby causing her to be premature and growth restricted. Could the same factor have caused both? Could that factor be Accutane? I'm not sure, but it seems plausible to me given all my long-term symptoms. Since my pregnancy, I've had a regular period, but still light. I'm pregnant again now and praying that I don't experience the same complications. I wish there was something I could do to improve things.

To Disty: I absolutely understand your point--if the research is not there, then folks like me have no leg to stand on. And, yes, if we had such bad acne that we considered accutane in the first place, what was going on with our immune systems at the time to cause it? However, I think the biggest question is for those of us who took the medicine at a young age and then didn't try to concieve until our late 20's into our 30's. If the drug labels are now stating that it may cause infertility in dogs, then they (the drug company) better start doing more research regarding long-term side effects on humans. Thank you, Mitch UK, for the lead on "acutaneaction". I will look into that group.

Hi Louise - I was the one who mentioned about the "infertility in dogs" info on the sheet that came with the medication. This was not recently. I think it was in 1996 or 1997, which is when my sons, who are now 30 and 29 (and both infertile) took it. Unfortunately, as I understand it, this would be a very difficult issue to research, which means it's unlikely that anyone is going to do so.

I took Accutane when I was about 19 and in college. I am now 34. Just found out I have low sperm count and also 0 normal sperm out of 100 for sperm morphology. My wife and I have been married for 10 years and have been infertile.

I'm happy to see this forum and fortunate that so many have shared their stories.

I took Accutane when I was 22 for about 3 months. I've been devastated going through 3 IVF cycles, I've been pregnant 2 times and miscarried both pregnancies at 8 weeks. My Doctor believes it to be poor egg quality on my part. My family has no history of infertility of any kind.

I can now only imagine that my short use of Accutane contributed to my unexplained infertility. Tragic for all young women who hoped for improved skin and ended up not having the chance of having their own family!

This drug needs more research and adequate warnings to include infertility. Class action law suit against Accutane should include all people who are suffering infertility.

To the person considering it, Don't take accutane. I developed what I thought was sore muscles (also warned on the paper for side effects) ultimately it became a autoimmune disease that put me in a wheelchair. Chronic pain since 1997. My son asked me if he should take it. I told him not to. Now I'm reading abt infertility. Fortunately he took my advice. (the one time in his life LOL) & now I have gorgeous twin grand children. I'm in constant pain but lucky, I guess.

I am 30 and have been trying to conceive for 3 years. I've done 2 years of infertility treatment including 8 IUI's. I have had one miscarriage. I took accutane 3 times (6 months each): once at 16, again at 19 and then when I was 25. Obviously accutane does not "cure" acne. "Heartbroken" does not scatch the surface of the pain that my infertility has caused my husband & me.
Is there really a link between accutane & infertility.....OR is it our hormones?
Hormone problems cause acne. Hormone problems also cause infertility.
Not to provide TMI, but at some point my body stopped producing peak type cervical mucus--which is necessary for conception. Did my hormones cause this or is it an adverse effect of accutane? Any thoughts? PS-my heart breaks for all of you beautiful ladies who know the pain of acne + infertility. How can we cheer ourselves up...other than discourage others from this yucky drug?

Is there a lawsuit? If so...I want in. I too have a huge, fertile family. I am the only one who took Accutane & I am the only one who is infertile.

My cervical mucous has been drastically reduced as well. Also, I recently experienced a miscarriage and was just diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder (APS). The disorder is autoimmune and taking certain meds can put you at risk. Accutane was not on that list (yet!), but I'm sure it's not out of the realm of possibilities. The clotting disorder caused my miscarriage, along with my daughter's premature birth, intrauterine growth restriction, my placental abruption, and restricted bloodflow in the cord.

I took Acutane when I was 13. I am now 33 and struggling with infertility. My husband and I are in our fifth year of treatments, and recently suffered our third failed ivf. The last ivf cycle was with the use of donor eggs from my sister. My sister is nine years younger than me, but her eggs were not as good as we hoped. She also took Accutane as a teenager. I truly believe there is a correlation and am livid that I may have jeopardized my future because the facts weren't presented. I am very interested in moving forward with action against the makers of this drug.

My husband took accutane in 1989 at age 15. He was diagnosed with a zero sperm count 10 years ago.

I thought that Accutane was no longer able to be prescribed.
