Ampyra Headaches

Updated

I have been taking Ampyra for 4 days. I have noticed a decrease in fatigue but headaches daily. The question is will they eventually go away on their own, or do I skip a day and see if they stop or quit til I see the doc ?

I have been taking Ampyra for 4 days now I am feeling like the walking is slightly easier. My backpain has increased slightly but it isn't intolerable, it's ignorable. I'm liking. I have posted and will continue to post updates about my experiences with it on http://iamsurvivingms.blogspot.com check it out if you'd like

I have been taking Ampyra for a little over two weeks now, and I have experienced a marked improvement in my range, stamina, and walking speed. My family has noted that they have seen improvements, as well. Walking has been my main problem. My range was about 6-7 city blocks, and if I exceeded that, I would find myself shuffling badly and walking unstably, as if drunk. Now, that is not so much the case, and I actually lift my feet more instead of dragging them along the ground! I am not sure what my range is, but I seem to recover more quickly after walking for a bit.

Ampyra is a very new medication, just recently approved by thee FDA, it contains the active ingredient Dalframpridine. It is most commonly used to help treat MS symptoms.

That said, yes, headaches are a common side effect, which should wear off as your body adjusts to the medication. If they don't or become severe, you should speak to your doctor.

Other side effects may include: nausea, insomnia, dizziness and back pain.

Is there anything else I can help with?

I have been on Ampyra for over a week and feel more stable when walking with my cane. I can stand longer and dress myself while standing wothout my cane or holding on to something. Side effects were minimal but went away after a few days. This is the only medication that I actually look forward to taking.

Hi all. Well its been 2 weeks yesterday that i am taking ampyra. Everyone at work is noticing how much better i am walking. I actually walked all day on friday w/o my cane. Yeah!!! So very excited..What a habit is is grabbing that cane. Its hard to break the habit since its been 3 years.LOL. But i think if this drug is going to work for us, we need to do that and start trying to stop using them and start letting the muscles>nerves work again. I mean, if we continue 2 rely on the canes, etc.our bodys r going to think this is how it is supposed to be. I am a PT and when any one damages nerves, your brain is smart and will retrain it self 2 a certain extent, so i think its wise to try an Step away from the canes, lol. Truthfully tho, i get scared walking w/o mine, but i am going to make a concious effort. Go get em you guys!!!

I have been taking Ampyra for 2 weeks now. I have some improvement in balance and walking. Still have a little more back pain than before I took it. Has not helped back spasms yet. Does anyone else have spasms that start in lower back and cause their legs to stiffen and pull up into fetal position? Will this eventually stop. It seems to only happen at night and right now 3-5 timas per night. So far I am happy with the Ampyra and it is well worth the price. I hope all of you get it and have even more success.

I took my first Ampyra tablet today and am hoping things improve but my legs would barely move and were extremely stiff! Falling into lots of walls and shaking all over badly.......anyone have similar experience in beginning? I'm wondering if I should continue???

Took 4 doses of Ampyra, and I can't believe how I can walk. Walking is my main problem-tried the walk aide but didn't really work so well for me. After 4 doses of Amypra I walked over 1/2 mile. After 6 doses I was on my feet most of the day, shopped for 2 hrs and tried on bathing suits! (impossible before). I had a little dizziness the first 2 days but that seems to be going away. I have had a little bit of insomnia, but nothing I can't deal with. I can't believe this-hope it continues!

In response to the wheelchair patient - my friend's ex-husband was wheelchair bound and participated in the 4-aminopyridine drug trials (fampridine). He is now walking!

I took my first dose last night at 10pm and woke up this morning very dizzy and weak. I'm hoping this will subside as I continue on ampyra. Has anyone else experienced this when they started on the drug?

Zinolivia1, My friend's ex-husband was in the clinical trials and his dose varied. He took the compounded dose (4-aminopyridine) not the current Ampyra. It was via these trials that the currenty dose of Amypra 10mg every 12 hours was established. I'm on my 4th day and I was able to clean my house for 5 hrs today! (prior to Ampyra I could do 15 minutes max-I'm hopeful this improvement will continue).

My neice also has MS and is wondering if Ampyra helps leg pain (I don't have any pain with my MS so I can't share any experience with her). Does anyone have leg pain/burning and has Ampyra helped that?

I have been on Ampyra for 3 weeks now and a few days ago I did something I have not done in 10 years. I felt really good one night and decided to try to run. It didn't look great but I actually ran about 15 yards in some low cut grass. I did that 4 times while my wife stood there and cried. Like I said it was a little clumsy looking but it felt wonderful. As you all know, every day is a little different and I haven't felt confident in my balance to try it again but I am sure I will soon. I hope and pray you will all be able to get on Ampyra soon and it will help you to do the same. Try it and stick it out for at least a couple of months. Hopefully it will help

Zinolivia1, My legs get extremely stiff. Was on Baclofen 10mg twice daily and have not cut back to 10mg at bedtime. Currently I have almost no stiffness in my legs since starting Ampyra. I have never had any numbness or tingling in my legs or anywhere else. Today I shopped for quite some time and had no difficulty walking. I almost feel like I did before having MS. Still can't believe it-hope it keeps up! Get on it ASAP-I was scared too because of the seizures but the benefit for me definitely outweighs the risk!!!!!!

I started taking Ampyra yesterday 8-31-2016. I've already noticed two common side effects: blurred vision and headaches. I'm hoping this is temporary. I've heard great things about this medication, and wouldn't want to give up on it so soon. Anyone's input would be great. :-)

Hi, I took 3 days dosages and felt absolutely horrible- balance was way off (had very little balance issues prior). The last dose gave me a huge anxiety attack.
I immediately stopped taking, now it feels like I am in a relapse . I hope to God I return to what I was before. I had very few issues and wish I never took it.

Hi, feel so blessed when I read other's experiences. I am onto my 2nd month of this. It has helped walking, no headaches. I have had a bad cold (lots of others had this too) and experienced a hives breakout in month 2 which I questioned the gp about and they seemed to think was not due to the drug. So expensive as it is I would recommend this.

hi the instructions say to keep to 12 hours apart (so i get very nervous about keeping that strict) - i was also told that it works better on an empty stomach, so to take early in the morning and before dinner. I've just started and have found it helped and then today not so good.

Hi there,

you are not supposed to skip a day, so you should continue with it and see if the headaches subside; if they do not go away, I would recommend your speaking with your neurologist. By the way, I'm writing from Canada, and it's called FAMPYRA here. Good luck!H
