4 Year Old Patient

Updated

I know that everybody has different reactions to drugs, but I have to ask if what my daughter is going through is similar to anyone else's experience. My daughter is 4 years old and has been diagnosed with minimal change nephrotic syndrome. She is currently halfway through a 12 week cycle of prednisone. Of course her face is swollen. We expected that. Her appetite has increased. We expected that. The thing that is concerning to me is that she has seemed kind of down and "mopey" for the past couple of days. She made the comment that she is having trouble putting her shoes on because her belly gets in the way. Could it be that her weight gain is causing her to be depressed? Does a 4 year old even think like that? This medicine seems to have changed her a lot, and I cannot wait until it is over. The dr. said that if a relapse was to occur, then we could treat with a 7 day cycle of prednisone. Does anybody else have any experiences to share about prednisone in a small child?

I don't have experience using it in a child, but I can tell you that yes, it can cause the depression she is experiencing and yes, children are perfectly capable of thinking that way.

It does have an effect on many areas of the body, including brain function and can cause mood problems.

I would suggest talking to her doctor about it, just to be on the safe side, as it may not be the right medication for her.

As a responsible parent You Must call a nurse or doctor and ask their opinion. Also you should get a 2nd opinion from the pharmacist. Do not hesitate to call and speak with a nurse the energy it took you to post this concerns me when u should have spoken to a Doctor or nurse

My 7yr old son was prescribed 3 x 5mg prednisone tabs 3 times daily for 5 days and suffered for 9 months with anxiety, depression and confusion, at the end of that time he emerged as if nothing was wrong.I was told by the Dr. that this high dose was fine to give for the cough he had and would have no after effects. That was 20 years ago. Seek another opinion.
